Overall Experience

My overall experience was amazing! I have always wanted to study fashion in Paris and this program allowed me to fulfill that dream. I learned so much about Haute Couture Fashion and how the fashion industry works in Paris. I also learned so much about the history of Paris and France during my stay. Additionally being in this program allowed me to travel to different places in Europe and learn new things about different cultures.

Learning experience

The most valuable learning experience was the Costume class in which we made a traditional nineteenth-century corset. We spend the whole semester making this corset learning pattern making, sewing, and fitting techniques to ensure the corset would fit each of us perfectly at the end. It was very fun and I truly learned so much by making this garment.

Memorable experience

I certainly have a lot of memorable experiences from this study abroad program. One I will never forget was being asked to help as a volunteer at Paris Fashion Week for the Yanina Couture Show and then afterward getting the opportunity to sit in the audience and watch the show.

What did you not expect?

Some things that surprised me were how hard it is to make a name for yourself in the world of Haute Couture and how long of a journey the process is. It gave me perspective on my life and the next steps I should take for my career, but it didn't change my goal or dream.

What advice would you give?

I think everyone who can study abroad as it is an incredible opportunity to meet new people, experience new cultures, visit new places, and grow as a person. It's important to save up money as the process can be a bit expensive depending on the program, but that shouldn't stop you from doing it as many amazing sources can help. Additionally, it's important to research the program you want to do and make sure it's a good fit and will help you grow.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience has greatly positively impacted my life, it solidified the fact that I want my career to be specialized in Haute Couture fashion. It also helped me understand the demands of a career in Haute Couture and it helped me understand some future steps I should consider as a fashion designer. Living in Paris for almost five months made me realize that I want to expand my knowledge and understanding of the French language as it can be very beneficial for my career and my life.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first learned about this international opportunity through my academic advisor when I was a freshman. Since then I looked for more information by going to the study abroad fair and talking with other advisors.
