Responsibilities

Every day is different due to the various events at Des Moines Golf. One day I could be serving food at a wedding; the next day, I'm watching food on a buffet line for a golf tournament, making a dessert table for a tea party, to then sitting in a meeting learning what is coming up next for an event at the country club. My overall responsibility is to ensure members are cared for and exceed their expectations.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship experience was working with our event director Samantha Richards. I was able to learn with her hands-on how she can create a member's vision of an event and being able to plan and execute it by meeting with members and corporations. Then learning how to communicate that to the rest of the staff involved in that day's event.

Learning experience

Learning how to respond to and react to mistakes I've made. Missing details on an event or even a simple food service task is easy. Demonstrating how to fix a mistake will make a person feel cared for and understood. Being able to show empathy will go a long way when working with people interpersonally. Also, being able to adapt quickly and positively to changes within the event.

What advice would you give?

Be flexible! Changes happen constantly in this industry, especially at the last minute. Being able to communicate these changes and positively respond is vital! This will help keep everything organized as best it can be and will help from getting our team from being flustered. Overall it will keep the work environment fun and light-hearted.
