AMES, Iowa – In April, educators, researchers and stakeholders from Iowa State’s School of Education gathered for an insightful and collaborative workshop titled, “AI in Education: Conversations, Opportunities and Co-Discovery.” The April workshop was part of a broader project titled, “Critical AI in Education Pathways: A Comprehensive Resource for Instructors on Ethical AI Integration,” funded by ISU’s Miller Faculty Fellowship.

Led by School of Education professor and principal investigator, Evrim Baran, this project aims to develop accessible, customizable and interactive educational resources on AI in education. The resource is designed to empower educators with foundational AI knowledge, practical applications and insights into ethical considerations such as bias, equity and accessibility, fostering informed and reflective integration of AI in educational contexts.

During the engaging workshop, participants actively explored the transformative role of AI within educational settings. Through vibrant discussions and collaborative activities, attendees developed innovative approaches to responsibly leverage AI in teacher education and educational practices, addressing both opportunities and ethical challenges.

The event featured lightning talks from key institutional partners, including the Student Innovation Center, University Library, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and the Translational AI Center (TrAC). Additionally, educators from the Winterset Community School District provided valuable insights and shared practical experiences about AI integration in K-12 classrooms.
