Doctoral alumna Siti Nurhayati Khairatun received the Top 5 ICHRIE Research Report Award at the Annual International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (ICHRIE) Conference. Her report, ‘A Call for Mandatory Inclusion of Alternative Dispute Resolution Practice in Restaurant Franchising,’ aims to address the conflicts experienced by the franchisor-franchisee in their business relationship. Based on her findings from a content analysis of 23 New York state court records, most franchisees opted for the litigation instead of an alternative dispute resolution, or ADR. This is because the ADR practice was not included in their franchise agreements. It appeared that some franchisors attempted to withdraw from the conflicts even before the issues were being resolved. Hence, a mandatory inclusion of ADR practice should be mandated by the lawmakers in protecting the franchisees’ interests. Khairatun currently works at Universiti Putra Malaysia as a senior lecturer on the Faculty of Food Science and Technology in the Department of Food Service Management.
