Research on intergenerational estrangement by Megan Gilligan featured in New York Times story: Research on intergenerational estrangement by Megan Gilligan was mentioned on July 23, in a New York Times article on grandparents who are estranged from their grandchildren. Gilligan is an associate professor in human development and family studies. In her study, 11 percent of 561 later-life mothers reported being estranged from at least one child. Her qualitative research also suggests that value dissimilarity leads to estrangement between mothers and adult children.
