Responsibilities

During my internship at Mary Greeley Medical Center in the Adult Behavioral Health Unit, I supported the social work team and interdisciplinary staff in delivering patient-centered care. I assisted in facilitating and leading therapeutic group sessions focused on coping skills, communication, and emotional regulation. I also contributed to developing and revising individualized patient treatment plans, observed and participated in case discussions, and collaborated with staff from other unites, including Emergency, Medical Telemetry, Medical/Surgical, and Pediatrics, to better understand discharge planning and patient transitions.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was gaining the confidence and competence to independently lead therapeutic group sessions for patients in the Behavioral Health Unit. Over time, I developed a strong understanding of facilitating meaningful discussions, managing group dynamics, and adapting content based on patient needs. It was rewarding to see patients actively engage in sessions I prepared and to receive positive feedback from patients and staff about the impact of those groups. This leadership and therapeutic presence growth affirmed my ability to work in a clinical setting and reinforced my passion for medical social work.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned during my internship was to remain grounded and empathetic while working in high-stress environments. I gained a deeper understanding of how mental health challenges affect individuals differently and the importance of meeting patients where they are without judgment. I also learned how essential communication, collaboration, and flexibility are in an interdisciplinary team. Most importantly, I recognized the value of small moments, whether building rapport with a patient or supporting a colleague, as powerful tools in creating a healing environment.

What advice would you give?

My advice to future students in my major is to be open to learning from every experience, even the challenging ones. Take initiative, ask questions, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, it's the best way to grow professionally and personally. Build strong relationships with your supervisors and colleagues, and be intentional about self-reflection throughout your internship. Remember that empathy, patience, and professionalism are as important as any technical skill you'll learn.
