Responsibilities

I interned in the buying office for the women's active department and worked closely with the allocations analysts helping them in their roles. I worked in Kohls's systems to help write orders for products and allocating goods to stores. I also look at sales reports and data to create presentations and provide information for future decision-making on the business. I also attend classes put on by Kohls to improve professional skills and learn more about Kohls as a company.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was giving a successful presentation in front of my team and multiple executives. I received great feedback and my opinion was valued by the higher-up people in my division. I also gave presentations in front of 50+ people so I was proud to be able to still give a good presentation while being so nervous.

Learning experience

I have learned so much about merchandising and buying while in this role but I have also learned so much about the corporate world. I have learned a lot about collaboration and networking. Kohls's has a large emphasis on learning about many different areas so I have not only learned about buying but I have learned about product development, marketing, and digital. I have also learned how to give and receive feedback from everyone around me.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students is to focus on all that you can on soft skills. While everyone may have different systems and processes you can always stand out by being good at networking or presenting. If you can shine with curiosity the technical skills will come. I would also suggest keeping up with information and news in the industry in order to stay knowledgeable. This can allow you to bring current ideas to your company.
