Responsibilities
My responsibilities during my internship were small things around the office, like organizing rooms and setting up meetings. I was also responsible for helping the Integrated Health Home team research assessability and resources for our clients. Lastly, I assisted with outreach programs and connected with community members about Stepping Stone and the services we provide for our clients.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my internship was creating connections with counselors and their clients. I learned how to be an effective counselor and the do and don't when working with clients. I also assisted with the outreach program for the homeless population in Des Moines, which allowed me to make connections and learn more about how to help people who are struggling with homelessness.
Learning experience
The biggest lesson I learned was time management. I had to learn what type of work-life balance worked for me and how I would fit all my hours, homework, work, and social life into my week without feeling burnt out. Eventually, I was able to fit it all into my week, but learning how was the biggest thing I learned this semester.
What advice would you give?
I advise looking for internships early so you are not stressed at the last minute to find a placement. I would also recommend you apply to a couple of different ones to see their differences and which fits best. Finding an internship can be daunting and sometimes challenging, but as long as you present your true self to the agency, you will find the right fit for you.
