Bailey Johnston
Responsibilities
I work primarily in the shelter dealing with the daily tasks that arise. My daily tasks include completing intake paperwork for incoming residents, answering phone calls regarding several different issues, discharging paperwork as well as organizing incoming donations. I also help out with Reggie's Sleepout and do data entry with the executive director. My job also allows me to interact with residents of the shelter, help them make housing plans as well as point them to other resources in the community.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment from this experience has been working with people to divert them from believing the shelter is their only option. Another great accomplishment has been working with the homelessness prevention program by helping applicants complete their applications and listening to why they require rental assistance.
What advice would you give?
This internship has been an eye opening experience. Be prepared to witness situations you may be uncomfortable with and be able to handle a lot of responsibility. The staff is great and there is a wonderful work environment where you will learn a lot and meet a diverse group of people.
