Responsibilities
During my internship, my responsibilities included working the front desk, shadowing personal trainers, shadowing membership consultants, and learning Eat the Frog training. When I worked the front desk, I checked members into the gym, greeted them, and washed towels/made sure sanitation bottles were filled up throughout the gym. Shadowing both personal trainers and the membership consultants shows different ways a client can be trained and how membership sells to potential members at the gym. Doing this helped me show how I can do my job better in training and selling. Finally, learning the Eat the Frog training requires learning a completely new style of teaching a fitness class.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during my internship was when I was able to start teaching Eat the Frog classes completely on my own. This took me about 8 weeks into my internship after participating, shadowing, and teaching parts of the class. I felt like this was my greatest accomplishment because I had never taught this type of class before, and I am now able to teach on my own.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson I learned during my internship is not to be afraid to ask questions for help/understanding. I learned this through struggling to do different things throughout my internship and trying to figure it out on my own. I finally asked questions and learned from other people, and it was the best thing I could do. After I started asking questions, I gained more knowledge, and it also helped me create new relationships with the people at my internship.
What advice would you give?
The advice I would give to future students is to get as much hands-on training as you can. Try to get experience by shadowing a professional in the field you would like to work in, and take advantage of the hands-on learning you will get from different labs for classes.
