Responsibilities

As an Event Planning Intern for the Office of Admissions, I was responsible for helping plan and coordinate their Intensive Training Week for the Admissions Counselors. During this week-long training, I also was able to plan a session and present on different people/places on Iowa State's campus that would be helpful for the Counselors to know about. Outside of this event, I also helped create resources for future new hires to Iowa State, which will help them get oriented in this space.

Accomplishments

The successful execution of the Intensive Training Week, which was two months' worth of planning.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned from this experience is that not everything will go exactly as you plan. You could try and plan for every little detail, but life is messy. So don't panic if not everything goes "perfect." It will all work out in the end.

What advice would you give?

If you want to work for a company, and it doesn't appear they have any internships available for Event Planners, contact them. I contacted the Director of Recruitment (internship supervisor) and asked if there were any opportunities, and they created this position for me. So take that leap of faith. The worst they could say is no.
