Responsibilities

Will lead efforts in pattern refinement and small-batch prototype manufacturing for ongoing adaptive harness wear trials, gaining hands-on experience in functional product development. Assist with gathering relevant literature and supporting manuscript drafting to contribute to the scholarly dissemination of this research.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment was completing our pillowcase version of the prosthetic harness. We finished our initial prototype by changing the original patterns and bonding the leather piece layers together. After making some changes, we were able to create a successful final prototype that we now get to test.

Learning experience

My greatest lesson learned from this internship experience was troubleshooting with the laser cutting machine. I encountered issues with the laser cutting machine when cutting foam material and tested multiple strategies to improve the cutting quality for the leather piece. I was successful after placing the foam side up and running the laser cutter twice. This method improved my results and reduced the melting of fabric and number of incomplete cuts. The next step we are going to be trialing is placing a cardboard sheet under the foam to see if it helps prevent melting, and can improve our efficiency and runt he machine less when cutting. This way we can reduce the steps when creating this leather piece.

What advice would you give?

I advise students to really focus on their projects and work, and to give their best effort, because most of the time, you will want to add it to your portfolio. I also recommend trying new things, because you may learn skills or ideas you never knew were connected to your major. As well as attending class and using the work time your professors give you, it will help you not to be as stressed at the end of the semester.
