Responsibilities

As the Health & Wellness Intern, your main role is to help promote healthy lifestyles to roughly 2,600 employees across the State of Iowa. Some job duties include: -Coordinating & leading monthly Wellness Team Meetings. -Creating monthly Wellness Newsletters to distribute to all employees. -Coordinating different wellness initiatives throughout the year. -Planning for the yearly wellness calendar. -Assisting with the Workers' Compensation processes. -Help lead daily stretches on Microsoft Teams. -Help with the billing processes related to the Health & Safety Team.

Accomplishments

The greatest accomplishment while being the Health & Wellness Intern was coordinating and promoting a coloring contest that Iowa DOT employees' children/grandchildren/etc. could participate in. The entries had to be related to health, and it was a great opportunity for the adults to bring up the discussion of wellness to the kids. The winning entries were featured in the 2021 Wellness Calendar that is available to all employees, with an honorable mention page on the back. I was able to present this project at two different leadership meetings!

Learning experience

Take the time to get to know the people you are working with, even if they are not on your direct team. These people will be great contacts in the future! I am a person who likes to ask questions, which was very valuable in this internship. Questions I had lead to deeper conversations, which often lead to improving a process or idea.

What advice would you give?

Begin the process for searching for an internship sooner than you think. A great opportunity could be available and you would never know it. If a company is offering hands-on experience but it may not be directly related to your role, still do it! It helps you become well rounded as an employee.
