Christopher Connor
Responsibilities
Led strength, agility, conditioning, and core workouts for middle school and high school athletes. Demonstrated exercises and corrected form during squats, deadlifts, presses, and other movements. Created workouts based on the athletes’ ages, abilities, and individual goals. Assisted with speed, jumping, agility, and strength testing. Helped maintain a clean, organized, and safe training environment. Visited Nevada and Colo-NESCO High Schools to observe team training and assist athletes with their lifts.
Accomplishments
Helped a group of three athletes grow into a consistent group of five. Helped younger athletes improve their lifting form, confidence, balance, strength, and coordination. Adjusted workouts to make training more enjoyable for athletes who struggled with motivation. Became more comfortable leading full workouts and giving coaching feedback. Watched one athlete make major improvements in his form, confidence, and hand-eye coordination.
Learning experience
One of the most significant things I learned was the importance of effective communication. Every athlete learns differently, so I had to adjust how I explained and demonstrated exercises. I also learned that asking questions is better than guessing. I regularly asked Ben about programming, coaching cues, and exercise selection. This internship helped me become more confident as a leader and trainer. I learned that coaching is not only about improving strength and athletic performance. It is also about building relationships, keeping athletes motivated, and making training enjoyable.
What advice would you give?
My advice would be to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. Leading groups and correcting form can feel uncomfortable at first, but practice helps build confidence. Ask questions, accept feedback, and stay flexible because every athlete responds differently. An internship is a great opportunity to learn new skills, discover what you enjoy, and open doors for your future career
