Emily Waugh
Responsibilities
Throughout my internship, I prepared for summer events and the 2026 Dallas County Fair by gathering, organizing, marketing, and restocking materials. I assisted with summer programming and youth leadership activities. When necessary, I assisted with office duties such as answering the phone, assisting with walk-in visits, and organizing the office.
Accomplishments
One of my biggest accomplishments during my internship was having some of the summer programming handed off to me. On my very first day in the office, I was handed a program to plan and facilitate. I was very proud, as I had put these programs together without any assistance.
Learning experience
One of the greatest lessons that I learned from this experience was to make connections with as many people as I can. I chose this experience as I am moving to Dallas County post-grad and wanted to get my foot in the door. Not only have I been able to make my own connections, but I have been able to help others make connections. Each year a local business has donated buckets to the livestock exhibitors but my supervisor had not idea exactly who they were. Turns out, my boyfriend's family business was the one donating the buckets the whole time! I was able to connect him and his father with my supervisor so they now have a contact at the office when fair season rolls around.
What advice would you give?
Dear future HDFS students, go out of your comfort zone and try new opportunities. When you think outside the box, great things may arise. Connections are one of the most important aspects of your career; you never know who you may meet!
