Ethan Perryman
Responsibilities
Helped oversee both individual and group training sessions, led training circuits and dynamic warm-ups, worked one-on-one with clients to teach client exercises and offer guidance, showed correct movement mechanics and appropriate lifting techniques, contributed to the creation of training courses for younger clients, helped local high schools with athlete training programs.
Accomplishments
Gaining Ben's confidence to coach clients on my own was one of my biggest achievements throughout my internship. By the end of the internship I progressed from shadowing to conducting one-on-one training sessions, giving feedback and instruction on exercises, and contributing to the development of training programs with no supervision.
Learning experience
The most important thing I took away from my internship was that creating workouts is just one aspect of becoming a successful coach. I discovered that effective coaching stems from building relationships with clients, attending to their unique requirements, and assisting them in developing confidence both within and outside of the gym.
What advice would you give?
Future kinesiology students should seize every chance to obtain hands-on training outside of the classroom, in my opinion. Internships and practical coaching experiences are where you really build your confidence and communication abilities, even though your coursework gives you the knowledge and foundation you need. Make errors, ask questions, and go beyond your comfort zone without fear. You will be better equipped for your future profession the more you interact with clients and coaches. Understanding the science behind exercise is vital, but so are forming relationships and having an open mind.
