Responsibilities

I was a front-of-house intern, so that means that I was mainly working all front-of-house positions. I learned how to be a hostess, server, event server, food runner, and serving assistant while working closely with our group of managers to review what I could improve and what they could improve. I helped take reservations, host events, and wait tables in all areas of the venue. In addition, I worked with my managers and our chefs to improve dishes being sold in our restaurant.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was seeing changes I made to recipes be executed by the kitchen and have these dishes sent out to guests. I was able to recreate dishes that were on the menu with our chefs and then reviewed them with my supervisor. My supervisor would grade my dish and discuss what needed to change. We would then relay that change to the kitchen so that it could be fixed/practiced for the next meal service.

Learning experience

The greatest lesson I learned through this experience is that it is okay not to be right. At work, I have always struggled to know when I am in the wrong, and I'm often very hesitant to listen to other people's advice. I have found through this internship that it is important to hear your coworkers out to find the best solutions to any problems you may encounter. This can help you create better relationships with your coworkers and help you become a more efficient and knowledgeable employee.

What advice would you give?

I would advise future students in my major to do more research before choosing an internship. I think that it is important to research your employer to determine if they are someone you want to work for or not. It is also important to consider if the internship is tailored towards a position you are interested in working in. Doing all this can help you get a better idea of the companies you want to work for and the positions you want to work in after graduation.
