Responsibilities
During my internship, I am responsible for managing the Bill Riley Talent Search, assisting with Free Stage entertainment, coordinating contests, reviewing contracts, working directly with superintendents, and helping organize the Iowa State Fair Parade. I also assist with planning and coordinating off season events. In addition to event coordination, I provide excellent customer service by handling important phone calls and responding to emails professionally. I am also responsible for keeping accurate and organized records using Microsoft Excel and Word, making sure all information is thorough and correct.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment during this internship has been learning more about event management and how it works in a professional setting. I have improved my ability to multitask, solve problems, and stay organized while managing different responsibilities. Another accomplishment has been being trusted to coordinate the Bill Riley Talent Search. I have been responsible for calling participants, scheduling performances, and communicating with people throughout the process. Having the opportunity to help coordinate this event has allowed me to build my communication and organizational skills while contributing to its success.
Learning experience
The greatest lessons I have learned during this internship are the importance of providing excellent customer service, even when a customer is upset or a situation is stressful. I have also learned how important it is to problem solve when things do not go as planned and to stay calm under pressure. Another important lesson has been that making mistakes is a normal part of learning. Taking responsibility for those mistakes and working to correct them shows professionalism and earns the respect of others. I have learned that remaining calm and composed during difficult situations helps create a more positive outcome for both the customer and the organization.
What advice would you give?
Talk to as many people as possible within our major and take advantage of opportunities to make professional connections. You never know what opportunities, experiences, or career paths may come from a simple conversation! Networking with professors, classmates, and industry professionals can help you learn more about the field and open doors for future internships and jobs! I would also encourage students to get involved in the Event Management major as much as they can. Being involved is very rewarding and provides valuable experience that helps you develop important skills, build confidence, and gain a better understanding of the industry. The more opportunities you take advantage of, the more you will learn and grow both personally, and professionally.
