Responsibilities

I spent my internship managing community contacts for the Live Healthy Iowa 5K and preparing supplies for each of the 19 locations, getting new Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Meets sites and sending out needed equipment. I also created a plan for the Go the Distance May event for kids.

Accomplishments

Over the past few months it has been a fun experience managing 19 different locations for the annual 5K. I had no idea how many moving parts went into putting on a 5K. When race day rolled around some locations went off without a hitch, while others had cancellations and postponements. Working through these obstacles gave me great experience in thinking on my toes and finding another way to hold the event.

What advice would you give?

My advice I would give to future students is to come in with an open mind, and being willing to try any task someone ask you to do. One of the many things this internship has taught me is to not be afraid to try something new. Even if you are hesitant of a job because you don't think you'd be good at it, try it anyways. Employers will be more impressed by your willingness to be the one to jump up and help versus the ones who don't.
