Responsibilities

During my internship, my responsibilities included teaching guidance class to all grades, running small group sessions, organizing, gathering and maintaining student data, and supporting students with emotional regulation. I also assisted staff and students wherever needed, helping to ensure a positive and supportive school environment.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship was creating a safe, supportive environment where children felt heard and cared for. Many of the kids chose me as their support person, which showed that they trusted me and felt comfortable opening up to me. Knowing I made a positive difference in their sense of safety and belonging was the most rewarding part of my experience.

Learning experience

I learned two important lessons during my internship. I learned the importance of building genuine, trusting relationships with students. When students feel safe, heard, and respected, they are more willing to open up and accept support. I also learned that sometimes the most meaningful help is simply being present and listening, rather than trying to immediately fix a problem. Patience, empathy, and consistency are so important in supporting students’ social and emotional needs, and small moments of connection can have a lasting impact. I also learned the importance of a strong leadership team. Supportive and collaborative administrators set the tone for the entire school and play a critical role in student success. When leadership communicates clearly, supports staff, and prioritizes students’ well-being, it creates an environment where counselors, teachers, and students can thrive.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future Human Development and Family Studies students is to take full advantage of hands-on experiences and to build strong relationships with professors and supervisors. The advisors and professors are incredibly supportive and always willing to help in any way they can. By developing strong relationships with your professors, you gain mentors who genuinely want to see you succeed, and it also makes classes more engaging and enjoyable.
