Responsibilities

Every day is different since they offer a variety of different events. One day I could be serving tables at a wedding; the next day, I am watching food on a buffet line for a golf tournament and then sitting in meetings learning what the next event is. I was part of the event operation teams for weddings, golf tournaments, breakfast clubs, and the Fourth of July (the largest event at DMGCC). My responsibility is to ensure the members are being taken care of and exceeding their expectations.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship experience was working with our event director Samantha Richards. I was able to learn with her hands-on how she can take their member's vision of an event and execute it, directly meeting with members to learn how they plan and organize events internally and externally at Des Moines Golf & Country Club.

Learning experience

Learning how to respond and react when I've made an error. It is easy to miss minor details when planning, even as small as serving food. Correcting it and having the member feel understood and appreciated is an important lesson that you can own a mistake and make a positive moment out of it.

What advice would you give?

Be flexible! Things don't always happen on schedule and change last minute in this major and industry. Adjusting and adapting quickly and positively makes a difference when dealing with changes you might not always agree with. It makes the work environment more fun and productive!
