Responsibilities

During my internship experience I added group speed and agility classes, observed group strength and conditioning sessions, and one-on-one training sessions. I helped the trainers with spotting and overseeing athletes during strength and conditioning sessions. At various times I would work with athletes during strength and conditioning sessions, going over top sets and progressions. Throughout my internship I helped the organization with social media and marketing of the various programs offered. When it was necessary I gave facility tours to potential new gym members, and would then discuss membership pricing plans. In addition I would keep up with general gym maintenance tasks around the facility.

Accomplishments

During this internship experience I gained an extensive amount of knowledge on proper programming for different populations and athletes. Working with my internship supervisor I was able to learn where to start a client at in respect to their training goals, and then how to properly set their intensity within a program. I also gained personal skills within the work environment.

Learning experience

I learned that every client is completely different. A large amount of where a clients program begins and ends is based on training goals and a clients level of experience. I learned that no program is the same, and trainers truly need to listen to their clients to create a program for a given client.

What advice would you give?

I would advise students to truly look into their field and decide what career they would like to get into at an earlier stage. Reaching out to organizations to do observation hours is an excellent way to find what areas within the major a person likes and what areas they don't. Finally, I would advise students to do something outside of their comfort zone. Trying new experiences has been the most beneficial aspect of college for me.
