Responsibilities
As the volunteer engagement intern, I worked closely with the volunteer department. I learned to use VolunteerHub for signing up volunteers, tracking hours, and creating reports. I supported and eventually led my own volunteer groups that completed various tasks, such as sorting and repacking food items. I helped with recruitment and outreach, attending monthly community outreach events.
Accomplishments
One accomplishment at the food bank was planning activities for Volunteer Appreciation Month and a volunteer event. I had complete control over planning and gaining approval for a small event for our volunteers and their families. I planned a picnic with food and drinks, games, and prizes. I also had the opportunity to collaborate with the outreach coordinator. I enjoyed planning this event and it was a great feeling to give back to the volunteers who do so much for the food bank and community.
Learning experience
Interacting with clients and volunteers experiencing food insecurity deepened my empathy and compassion. This experience allowed me to put myself in other people's shoes and understand others better. I gained a greater understanding of the challenges individuals and families face in our community and the critical role of nonprofits in providing essential services.
What advice would you give?
Take advantage of every opportunity you have to gain experience. There are so many paths you can take. The more experience you gain, especially in different areas, can help you figure out what you want to do and what you need as a future professional. I also highly recommend using career services. They were a huge help in revising my resume and cover letter when I was applying for internships.
