Responsibilities

During my internship, I supported health promotion initiatives. I participated in community outreach and educational efforts, observed and assisted with program implementation, and attended meetings with staff and community partners. My responsibilities included collecting and entering data to track program outcomes, promoting health and nutrition among older adults and youth. I practiced professional communication and teamwork daily while maintaining detailed task lists across multiple programs to ensure efficient coordination and follow-through.

Accomplishments

One of my greatest accomplishments during my internship was leading my own Walk With Ease program with Aging Resources of Iowa, which promotes physical activity and fall prevention among older adults. I also helped with the Pick a Better Snack program with Des Moines Public Schools. I also collected and entered outcome data for the Pick a Better Snack program. This experience allowed me to apply public health principles in a real-world setting, strengthened my organizational and communication skills, and gave me the opportunity to support a meaningful initiative that positively impacted community health.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned during my internship was the importance of flexibility and adaptability when working across multiple programs and with diverse populations. I gained firsthand experience in how community partnerships and clear communication are essential to the success of public health initiatives. I also learned the value of organization and time management when balancing multiple responsibilities. Most importantly, I saw how health and physical activity education interventions can have a lasting impact on individual well-being and community health.

What advice would you give?

My advice to future students in public health is to take advantage of every opportunity to get hands-on experience. Internships, volunteering, and community engagement will help you apply what you learn in the classroom and build valuable connections. Stay organized, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone because you’ll learn the most when you’re challenged.
