Responsibilities

During my internship with the Arc of Story County, I worked closely with both The Arc of Story County and Project Search to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in gaining meaningful employment and developing independent living skills. My responsibilities included assisting Project Search students at their internship cites by modeling tasks, providing verbal and visual prompts and gradually fading support to encourage independence. I supported daily classroom instruction, helping students build skills such as time management, communication and professional behavior. Most importantly, I helped promote self-advocacy, facilitated inclusive social activities and supported community engagement efforts for individuals with disabilities.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship with PS and the Arc was the opportunity to advocate for individuals with disabilities at the Iowa Capitol. We were invited to receive advocacy training at the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council before heading to the Iowa Capitol to speak directly to state legislators about the importance of employment and community inclusion for people with disabilities. We shared personal experiences from my internship, highlighting the impact that jobs training and supportive services has on individuals lives. It was empowering and meaningful opportunity to use my voice to promote positive change and stand up for the rights of those I work with every day.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned during my internship was that every day brings something new and being flexibility and adaptive is key. Working with individuals with disabilities taught me that no two days are ever the same. Each student had their own unique needs, moods, and challenges which meant I had to stay present, patient and ready to adjust my approach at any moment. Whether it was supporting a intern or athlete through a tough moment, celebrating a small success, or stepping in to help with unexpected changes, I learned to expect the unexpected and respond with empathy and professionalism. I learned how to be more resilient, creative in problem solving and confident in handling real-world situations.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students is to go in with an open mind, a flexibility attitude, and be willing to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because that's where the most growth happens. During your internship, you may face situations that challenge your confidence, push you out of your routine, or feel unfamiliar. Whether it is speaking up in meetings, supporting someone through a difficult moment, or trying a new skill, those uncomfortable moments are where you will learn the most about yourself! Don't let that shy you away, make sure you ask for help when you need it, take time to reflect on your experiences, and trust that each challenge will prepare you to be stronger, more capable, and more compassionate in your future career!
