Lehr Thorson
Responsibilities
I am an intern at the Ames Chamber of Commerce. I primarily work with graphic design and event management. With the graphic design portion I am in charge of designing internal and external communications and promotional materials, including flyers, signs, forms, event materials (program booklets, table tents, etc.) and social media images that are consistent with the Chamber’s brand and identity. I spend a lot of time collaborating with Vice President and Director of Digital Marketing on creative direction for event and marketing campaigns. On the events side, I work closely with project coordinators to develop/understand expectations for each project, and ensure completion is done within the quality standards and time frames expected. I am also attending and assisting with Chamber and affiliate events.
Accomplishments
So far my greatest accomplishment from this experience has been learning real world business norms. I've become very comfortable in my position and the tasks asked of me. I have been able to network with members of my community. These relationships will have the potential to help me in the future.
Learning experience
Trial and error is OK... in fact it is necessary - asking questions shows that you are interested and what to do your best - People want to help you succeed - Other peoples opinion and feedback is valuable
What advice would you give?
Start looking for internships right away, and don't assume you won't get the job because of your age. Show up on time! It is one of the most effortless ways to make a good impression. Stay off your phone. Be focused on the task in front of you.
