Responsibilities
I oversaw four daily one-hour exercise sessions for people with heart conditions. Leading warm-ups with stretches and hand weights, taking blood pressure vitals before, during, and after exercise, and keeping a watch on patients' heart rhythms were some of my main duties. Working with patients to develop individualized exercise prescriptions was an important part of my work. I also assisted the nurses with other office duties like documentation and class prep.
Accomplishments
Being able to collaborate closely with patients was my biggest internship achievement. I wasn't very comfortable speaking with or working with patients when my internship began. I felt super comfortable and at ease working with patients by the end of my internship.
Learning experience
My internship taught me many valuable lessons. Keep trying to help others. We have a responsibility to help others. Working with someone is much easier when you establish a genuine relationship with them. Many of my patients have expressed to me that they dislike having a robot for a doctor. I go out of my way to engage with them in a respectful/friendly manner.
What advice would you give?
This major offers a wide range of options for career paths. I would advise you to take advantage of any chance you get and to look into a wide range of choices. To be the best you can be in this field, you need to look outside the box and it is okay if you don't get your dream job right out of college.
