Responsibilities

Throughout my internship at Axis Therapy Centers, my primary responsibility was implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy programs to children with autism. I worked one-on-one with the individuals to help them develop their communication, social, play, behavioral, and daily living skills through each of their individualized treatment plans. My responsibilities were also collecting and recording data during my sessions, assisting with behavior management strategies, and collaborating with the team members and my supervisor. The most important responsibility was maintaining safe, supportive, and engaging environments for every client.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment I gained throughout my internship experience was becoming an Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). This helped me in being more confident in the services and care I was providing to the clients. Axis Therapy Centers supported me in getting my RBT certification by providing me with all of the training videos and hands on experience connected the the videos. This assisted in my learning by helping me develop and understand the skills and knowledge needed to effectively deliver ABA therapy to my clients. I saw progress made by each client throughout my internship and it reassured me that I played a big part in their growth and development. It felt so rewarding seeing this and reassured my passion of wanting to work with children.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned throughout my internship was that every child learns differently and how to be patient when giving support that is effective for their learning. I also learned how important being a team member is because of my collaboration with the other RBT's, BCBA's, and the families when being consistent with clients treatment plans. I have become more confident in myself and my skills of helping others achieve their goals. I learned to value the appreciation for small successes because it ultimately leads to long-term progress for each client.

What advice would you give?

My advice to future Human Development and Family Studies students is to always be open to learning new skills and not be afraid to ask questions. It may feel overwhelming to learn new things because it can feel so unfamiliar to what we are used to but, those experiences help us to gain confidence in our own skills and teaches us how to accept feedback. I would also give advice to take every opportunity you can to observe experienced professionals and build strong relationships with your coworkers and supervisors because they are the ones who can provide the most valuable guidance throughout your professional experience and career.
