Responsibilities

During my internship at Independence Village as a Life Enrichment Intern, I planned and facilitated a variety of engaging activities designed to support the emotional, social, and physical well-being of seniors. I led crafts, games, light workouts, and motor skill activities while encouraging meaningful conversation and social interaction among residents. I focused on creating a positive and welcoming environment by working at each resident’s pace, assisting with individual needs, and bringing joy and laughter into their daily routines. In addition to building strong relationships with residents, I took initiative in organizing materials, planning activities, and helping create memorable experiences that made each day more enjoyable and meaningful for the seniors.

Accomplishments

My greatest accomplishment during my internship at Independence Village was simply being able to make a difference in the residents’ days. Whether it was having a simple conversation with someone, helping set up special events and parties, or leading a full activity, I could see the positive impact I had on them. The residents always reassured me that I was doing a great job, which made the experience even more meaningful. Knowing that I could bring joy, laughter, comfort, and companionship to others was the most rewarding part of my internship.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned from this experience is that everyone is different and has their own individual needs. I learned how important patience, understanding, and positivity are in every situation. Something as simple as having an optimistic attitude or being there for someone can completely change their day. This experience taught me that the energy and kindness you bring into a space can impact not only yourself, but also the people around you in a very meaningful way.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students in my major is to be open to new experiences and push yourself outside of your comfort zone. Even when I felt nervous or uncomfortable at first, putting myself out there allowed me to learn so much more and truly enjoy the experience. By stepping outside of my comfort zone, I gained confidence, built meaningful connections, and developed valuable skills that I will carry into my future career.
