Responsibilities

I am the Intern for the Healthy Futures, Baby Bump & Beyond (BBB), and Family Nest (FN) programs within YSS. On the first and third Thursdays of every month, I help manage our BBB parenting class and incentive store in Ames. On the second and fourth Thursdays of every month, I help manage and supervise the nursery at our FN parenting class and incentive store in Boone. Every week I research and post an educational parenting video to post on the BBB and FN Facebook pages for all participating families to view. For the Healthy Futures home visitation program, I have shadowed a family development specialist at home visits for new and expecting mothers. Weekly office work may include prepping home visitation materials, helping write post-home visitation notes, and beneficial research for the future of the program.

Accomplishments

My first great accomplishment through my internship has been editing and recreating the screening process for our Healthy Futures program. I had the opportunity to evaluate the screening documents for the Healthy Futures program in the past and edit the requirements based on modern data and language. My second great accomplishment is still in the works. I shared to my supervisors that I have a passion for comprehensive sex education. As I am interning for family development programs, I have been given the task to enhance Healthy Futures’ family planning curriculum. I am in the beginning stages of this project but am excited for the opportunity to grow where my passion lies.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students looking for internship opportunities is to not settle on the internship that is the easiest to get. I spent several months researching and interviewing for internship experiences. The internship I landed in was a position I did not interview for, yet was referred to when a position I did apply for was unavailable.
