Responsibilities

My main tasks during my internship included setting up and tearing down events, attending meetings, including team meetings and client meetings, completing tasks they asked me to do, and completing the intern project. This summer, the project was to create a rental collection booklet to show clients what rental items they have.

Accomplishments

One of my accomplishments from my internship is that my confidence has grown and that I am better at taking initiative. When they ask me to do something, I am confident in my ability to do tasks, and I am not scared to ask questions. I have also gotten better about taking the initiative at events and being more assertive about sitting in on meetings. I also think that every event that I help at is an accomplishment. I showed up, did the best I could, helped the team, and made a beautiful event space.

Learning experience

During my internship, I learned many valuable lessons. First, I learned to pay attention to everything. Every instruction, comment, or need is essential to understand for you to be successful. Next is that there is always something new to learn, and it’s ok not to know everything-the events industry and trends are constantly changing. When starting at a new job, it’s important to ask any questions that you have. This helps you learn and will help you do your job correctly. One main thing I learned this past summer was that there is always a solution. During events, you never know what is going to happen-if a mistake is made, you don’t have something you need, or something doesn’t go as planned; you have to think on your feet and find a different way to do the task.

What advice would you give?

A few pieces of advice I have for you is to network with as many people as possible. Take advantage of the opportunities you have, such as attending every career/internship fair, meeting with your professors, and getting involved in extracurriculars. It never hurts to try; you never know what is going to happen. If you are debating between having an interview with a certain company, do it. You never know if you’re going to be just what they’re looking for! Something really important is to perfect your resume. Career Services at Iowa State is beneficial with this, and a good resume will make all the difference in your internship search. Finally, be present at your internship and limit your distractions. This helps you get the most out of your experience and learn
