Responsibilities

In this internship, I was responsible to assist the Event Operations department with any tasks needed to be completed for event clients. I observed and learned Marriott etiquette when speaking with clients and setting up event spaces to their specific standard. I also shadowed Food and Beverage, Banquets, and Coffee Breakers within the Event department, but spent the majority of the internship working with Event Services.

Accomplishments

A big event came in to my hotel for the company named Disability In, and it was very crucial that we held everything up to standards and went above and beyond to make the attendees with disabilities feel especially comfortable and welcome. I worked nonstop trying to complete every request or change that the client would make, and after the 8 day event was completed smoothly, I was given a toast by the Disability In leader as well as a thank you letter recognizing all my hard work I did to make their event successful.

Learning experience

I learned how important punctuality is as well as precision with each detail that goes into an event. I learned how important it is to do what is expected as well going above and beyond to make a client's event as memorable as possible, even if it is just supplying them a coffee every morning because you remember their order.

What advice would you give?

My advice would be to have a lot of patience going into an internship like this as well as understand that you will make a lot of mistakes, but you do not equate the entirety of the mistakes. You cannot beat yourself up if something goes wrong with an event, but you must learn from it and remember it for future events you host.
