Responsibilities
I was responsible for coaching all exercises to our members, I had to correct and modify exercises for members who needed so, I also was instructed with leading new leads and members through their first workouts to understand the flow and pacing of our gym layout. I was able to make sales on memberships and other programs that we offered along with day-to-day sales including merchandise and other products we offer. I had the opportunity to create personal training programs for two members during my internship which are still clients of mine post internship. I was also a coach for two of our major winter and spring programs that we offer, our 90- day transformation challenge and DEKA race event.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment would be building confidence in coaching our members each and every day. I wanted to make each member felt comfortable and safe when performing each exercise along with getting to know them on a personal level and understanding the best way they responded to coaching. Personally, I had a achieved a great accomplishment of losing 43 lbs during my internship and participating in our 90 day challenge.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson that I have learned is that everyone starts somewhere and as a trainer you need to be patient along with realistic with what you want your clients to be able to perform and accomplish. This will also help them build to their goals and understand where they are at currently along with where they can go.
What advice would you give?
My advice would be to gain the confidence in training early, take advantage of Iowa State's great recreation services and extra circulars offered within the major.
