Responsibilities
My responsibilities included implementing strength and conditioning in individual, small-group, and team-based settings. Help with daily gym upkeep and responsibilities, spotting lifts and correcting technique when needed, attend coach's meetings.
Accomplishments
My greatest accomplishment was being able to lead the ISU cheer team by myself. Was a little tough at first not being familiar with the crowd but with multiple sessions a week for cheer I got a good hang of how sessions should go. Talking with the team and coaches throughout sessions helped me become more confident when needing to lead.
Learning experience
The greatest lesson I learned throughout my internship was that every athlete learns a different way in the weight room. Specifically for my internship, everyone adjusted to technical cues differently. Learning how to come up with cues on the spot and figuring out how each individual learns and encourages them that way.
What advice would you give?
My biggest advice for future students is to build connections with your clients/team fast. The more you get to know who you are working with the easier it becomes to work with the individual and adjust to any changes they want to make to their goals or program. Building that connection leads to a lot of trust from the client. I became a lot more comfortable with interacting the more I had simple or personal conversations.
