Responsibilities

My responsibilities during my internship encompassed planning, coordinating, and executing events within Avionics Engineering and Technology Student Programs. I helped organize in-person events in Cedar Rapids for interns and co-ops as well as virtual events for student employees in other locations. Many of my tasks included sending out communication and reminders to students about events, working with facilities, creating slideshows and graphics, following up after events, and more.

Accomplishments

One of my greatest accomplishments during my internship was executing an outdoor field day for student employees. I took the lead on planning a bags tournament that had over 30 teams compete. I organized how bracket play would run, planned prizes for the winners, and ensured the tournament ran smoothly and on schedule. Nearly 150 employees attended the event and enjoyed free food, games, raffle prizes, and socializing.

Learning experience

One of the greatest lessons I learned from my experience is the importance of staying on top of things as an event planner. It is essential to be looking ahead at events coming up so you are prepared and have plenty of time to sort out all of the details. It is also important to think of all possible scenarios and have a backup plan in mind. I also learned that communication is one of the most important skills to have as an event planner.

What advice would you give?

I would encourage students to get as much experience in the event industry while you are in college as you can. It is such a large industry with so many different paths you can take, so it is very helpful to start learning what specifically you are looking for in your future career.
