Sadie Larrabee
Responsibilities
During my internship as an undergraduate school counselor at the elementary level, I supported students' academic, social, and emotional development. I assisted in leading classroom guidance lessons on topics such as cooperation, honesty, and courage. I also observed and participated in one-on-one and small group counseling sessions, collaborated with teachers and staff to address student needs, and helped organize school-wide events promoting positive behavior.
Accomplishments
During my internship, I achieved several meaningful accomplishments that reflected my growth in the role. I gained confidence in my abilities and developed a stronger sense of what it means to be a school counselor. One of my proudest achievements was organizing a large and successful Career Day event for students. Additionally, my performance throughout the internship led to me being offered a position as a Behavior Interventionist for the upcoming school year.
Learning experience
One of the greatest lessons I learned during my experience was the importance of asking questions. I realized that seeking clarification not only deepens your understanding but also shows initiative and a genuine willingness to learn. Rather than being a sign of uncertainty, asking questions demonstrates engagement and a strong commitment to professional growth.
What advice would you give?
My advice for future students in my major is not to let fear take over when it comes to finding an internship. While it's important to be proactive, by applying early and following up, there's no need to stress excessively. Opportunities will come with persistence and effort, so trust the process and stay confident in your abilities.
