Responsibilities

As an intern at the YMCA, you will find yourself working a wide array of projects and jobs. I spent time shadowing and then working the Front Desk/Welcome Center by myself, which emphasized the importance of positive interaction between staff and members. This is where I truly got to know the members in their best element; many would hang out around the front desk just to ask you how your day was going and chat about various things. While working at the front desk, you are expected to answer calls by the third ring, go on towel runs every thirty minutes, fold towels whenever dry, give new members tours of the facility and answer any questions people may have. My internship also incorporated a marketing and programming aspect as well. I planned mock events such as softball camps, fitness classes and summer youth camps. I also helped spread word throughout the community of any events that would be taking place in the future.

Accomplishments

The greatest accomplishment I had throughout my internship were the multiple relationships I was able to form with both my coworkers and members. I feel as if I broadened my network in ways unimaginable. I made friendships that will last a lifetime and met individuals who I will consider mentors for the rest of my life.

What advice would you give?

My advice for future students would be to put yourself out there and let there be room for growth. You cannot improve if you are holding back from all that you have to offer. Talk to every person you encounter with an open mind and always be ready to listen, for that is the only thing some people may need.
