Overall Experience

My study abroad experience in the Netherlands was incredibly meaningful and eye-opening. Through the International Human Services Leadership in Action program, I had the opportunity to meet with five nonprofit organizations (The Hague Humanitary Hub, OCHA, Fair Wear, Dress for Success, and Greenpeace International) and learn about global approaches to human services while in Amsterdam. The experience combined academic learning with real-world application, allowing me to better understand how different countries might address social issues. It was both personally and professionally transformative, and it deepened my passion for working in human services. It was also super awesome to be emerged in another culture.

Learning experience

The most valuable learning experience was meeting with the different nonprofit organizations and hearing directly from professionals working in the field. I learned how important collaboration, advocacy, and innovation are when addressing these complex social issues. It showed me that human services work is not just about helping individuals, but also about creating systems and partnerships that support long-term change.

Memorable experience

There were so many memorable moments during my trip, but visiting the Anne Frank House and the National Holocaust Museum really stood out to me. Both experiences were incredibly powerful and emotional, and they gave me a deeper understanding of history and the importance of empathy, human rights, and standing up for others.

What did you not expect?

One thing I didn’t expect was the meaningful connections that would come out of the trip. I was able to build relationships with my professor, peers, and individuals we met through the organizations, which made the experience even more impactful. These connections showed me the importance of networking and collaboration. Moving forward, I want to be more intentional about building relationships and learning from others, as those connections can lead to new opportunities and a greater impact in my future career.

What advice would you give?

My advice would be to take the opportunity, even if it feels outside of your comfort zone. Studying abroad is a unique experience that allows you to grow both personally and professionally. Be open to new perspectives, ask questions, and fully engage in everything the experience has to offer. It goes by quickly, so make the most of every moment.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience had a strong impact on both my personal growth and career goals. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident. Educationally, it allowed me to see how human development and family studies concepts are applied in different cultural contexts. It also reinforced my interest in working in human services and has inspired me to consider career opportunities that involve policy, advocacy, or even international work in the future.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first learned about this opportunity through my professor Joe Sample.
