Overall Experience
As someone who had never been abroad before, going to France was an exciting and eye-opening experience for me. Not only did I get to experience French culture firsthand, but I also gained a deeper understanding of the country’s history, traditions, and approach to food science. Through visits to the champagne region vineyards, the USDA, several restaurants, and local markets, I learned how agriculture and food regulations in France differ from those in the United States. Seeing these differences helped me better understand how culture, history, and government policies influence the way food is produced and consumed around the world. In addition to the academic knowledge I gained, being immersed in a new environment allowed me to grow personally by becoming more independent, adaptable, and open-minded. Overall, studying abroad broadened my perspective on both food science and the world around me.
Learning experience
The most valuable part of my experience in France was learning how important food and cuisine are to culture and everyday life. While in France, I had the opportunity to taste many different wines, cheeses, and baguettes, which allowed me to experience French cuisine firsthand. By listening to and speaking with people who grow, produce, and care deeply about their food, I began to understand why food holds such an important place in French culture and identity. There is a rich history throughout Paris, and I realized that the care and precision used in preparing food reflects that history and tradition. The attention to detail in how food is made could even be noticed in the taste itself. Through this experience, I learned that food can serve as a form of soft power because it represents culture, tradition, and national identity while also bringing people together. No matter the language or background, food is one of the few things that can connect people and create shared experiences.
Memorable experience
My most memorable experience in France was spending time talking with my peers and locals about French culture and daily life. It was meaningful to reflect on what we experienced each day and discuss how history, food, and traditions continue to impact people’s lives. There were many nights where our group spent hours sitting together at dinner talking about the places we visited, the history we learned, and the experiences we shared throughout the trip Those conversations became one of the most valuable parts of the experience for me because they allowed me to slow down, reflect, and truly appreciate everything around me rather than simply going through the motions. This mindset is something I brought back with me from France, and it has helped me become more thoughtful, present, and appreciative of everyday experiences and interactions with others.
What did you not expect?
Before going to France, I assumed that French people were more reserved and did not enjoy interacting with tourists very much. However, my experience in France completely changed that perspective. I realized how much pride and patriotism many French people have for their country, culture, history, and cuisine. Throughout the trip, I met many people who were knowledgeable and genuinely willing to share and explain French traditions, history, and daily life with us. Their passion for their culture made the experience much more meaningful and helped me gain a greater appreciation for the importance of cultural identity and heritage.
What advice would you give?
I would tell other students who want to study abroad not to be afraid to take the opportunity. Every study abroad program is designed to support students and make sure that no one has to experience everything alone. Throughout the program, you are surrounded by peers, professors, and guides who help make the transition into a new environment much more comfortable. Studying abroad also gives you the chance to have experiences that are unique and unforgettable, whether that is learning about a new culture, trying new foods, meeting new people, or seeing historical places firsthand. Although it may feel intimidating at first, the experience is incredibly rewarding and can help you grow both personally and academically.
How has this experience impacted your life?
My study abroad experience in France had a meaningful impact on my personal growth, education, and future career goals. The program focused on sustainability in the food industry and explored how food production, environmental impact, and cultural traditions are connected in both the United States and France. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of how the food industry affects the environment. I also learned how consumers are becoming more aware of sustainability and environmental concerns when making food choices. Personally, studying abroad pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident. Being immersed in a completely different culture allowed me to experience new perspectives and appreciate the importance of cultural traditions in everyday life. Exploring French cities, cathedrals, castles, and local food markets helped me better understand the strong connection between French history, cuisine, and culture. Educationally, the experience expanded my knowledge of food science by allowing me to compare food systems, food regulations, and sustainability practices in France and the United States. I was able to connect classroom concepts to real-world experiences. Learning about French cuisine and food preparation also showed me how food can reflect a country’s values, traditions, and history. This experience also influenced my long-term career goals by reinforcing my interest in the food industry and sustainability. It showed me the importance of understanding global food systems and considering environmental impacts when developing and producing food products. Overall, studying abroad gave me valuable academic knowledge, personal growth, and a broader perspective that will continue to shape both my future career and my outlook on the world.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first learned about this study abroad program at the CALS Study Abroad Fair. However, I had always known that I wanted to study abroad, so the CALS study abroad website was very helpful when deciding which program would be the best fit for me.
