Overall Experience

Studying abroad in London was a phenomenal experience for which I’m incredibly grateful. I learned from amazing tutors with expertise in fashion styling, illustration, and creative visual communication. I also connected with talented creatives from around the world and experienced meaningful personal growth.

Learning experience

I grew the most in terms of self-reliance and resilience while living abroad. It was my first time outside of the United States and my first time living so far from home. Navigating travel and transportation on my own, and learning to embrace unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations, helped me gain a stronger sense of independence.

Memorable experience

One of my most memorable experiences was connecting with creative individuals from around the world—some of whom became close friends. I loved collaborating with them in class, whether it was on styling projects or class field trips, and then exploring new places together on weekends. Those shared moments made the experience incredibly rich and unforgettable.

What did you not expect?

Coming from a small town in Iowa, I didn’t expect just how different the social dynamics in London would be. The way people interact—or sometimes choose not to—stood out to me right away. It made me more observant, open-minded, and adaptable. This awareness has changed how I approach both personal relationships and creative work.

What advice would you give?

Branch out to meeting new people and constantly seek out opportunities that will grow yourself as an individual but that are also fun! It can be scary trying new things and meeting new people, but once you take that first step, it will be easier and you will make so many friends and memories.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience reinforced my desire to be a lifelong learner and embrace a dynamic, ever-evolving career. I realized that I don't have to limit myself to one professional path—I can wear many hats and collaborate with other creatives on a variety of projects. That flexibility is something I now view as a strength in my future career.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first heard about Iowa State’s study abroad opportunities during my initial college visit. I later learned more about the London College of Fashion specifically through the study abroad fair, which really sparked my interest.
