Overall Experience

Studying abroad in Spain was one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career. It gave me the opportunity to step outside of my comfort zone, experience a different culture firsthand, and meet people from around the world. Living in Spain for several weeks allowed me to experience daily life instead of just visiting as a tourist. I enjoyed visiting historical sites, relaxing at the beach, trying authentic Spanish food, and spending time with classmates after classes. Looking back, I am incredibly grateful for the experience because it helped me grow both personally and academically. I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to take it because the memories and lessons will stay with you long after the trip ends.

Learning experience

The most valuable lesson I learned was the importance of slowing down and appreciating the people around you. In Spain, meals were often shared with friends or family and conversations were just as important as the food itself. People seemed to place a greater value on spending quality time together rather than constantly rushing from one responsibility to the next. Experiencing that lifestyle made me reflect on how fast paced life can feel in the United States. I learned that taking time to rest, build relationships, and enjoy everyday moments is essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced life. It is a lesson that I hope to carry with me long after my time abroad.

Memorable experience

The most memorable part of my study abroad experience was interacting with local people and learning about their lives while also sharing my own experiences from the United States. Our conversations went far beyond what you can learn from books or social media. We discussed traditions, education, daily routines, and current events, which helped me better understand the similarities and differences between our cultures.

What did you not expect?

One thing that surprised me was how different the daily schedule was compared to what I was used to in the United States. Many businesses opened later in the morning, and people seemed to prioritize family time, meals, and personal well being throughout the day. At first it was an adjustment, but I came to appreciate the different approach to balancing work and life. It reinforced the importance of being open minded and understanding that there is more than one way to approach life and learning.

What advice would you give?

My biggest piece of advice is to take the opportunity if you have the chance. It is normal to feel nervous about traveling to another country, especially if it is your first time, but the experience is worth it. Be willing to try new foods, explore places you have never been, and step outside of your comfort zone. Keep an open mind because not everything will be the same as it is at home, and that is exactly what makes studying abroad so valuable.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience has had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional development. Personally, I became much more independent and confident in unfamiliar situations. Living in another country required me to adapt to a different culture, communicate with people from different backgrounds, and become more comfortable with challenges that I would not have faced at home. Academically, the experience gave me a deeper understanding of Spanish culture and strengthened my language skills through daily interactions.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first learned about this study abroad opportunity through my professors and the university's study abroad fair.
