Overall Experience

During this trip, we were given the opportunity to meet with various Non-Governmental Organizations, or NGOs. We learned about their organizational structure, leadership, and the impact that each NGO has in their respective cause areas. In-between visits, we were able to explore Amsterdam, go to cafes and restaurants, markets, and enjoy the nature surrounding the city. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I absolutely loved every moment with it alongside the peers I went with.

Learning experience

The most valuable learning experience I had was meeting with Greenpeace International. During our conversation, one of the team members shared some of the most meaningful moments from her time with the organization. Hearing her stories showed me how powerful a dedicated group of people can be in influencing change, especially in shaping policy. It reinforced my belief in my own ability to contribute to meaningful change and deepened my appreciation for the work nonprofit organizations do to make that possible.

Memorable experience

The most memorable experience I had was biking through Vondelpark in Amsterdam. It stands out because it was a moment where I truly felt immersed in the city’s culture. Biking is a central part of daily life in Amsterdam, and being able to participate in that rhythm surrounded by locals, greenery, and the park’s lively atmosphere made me feel connected to the place in a meaningful way.

What did you not expect?

Something that surprised me was how quickly plans can change depending on the circumstances around you. This experience taught me the importance of patience and flexibility when navigating unexpected situations. Being open to change can create opportunities for growth, new perspectives, and even better outcomes than what you originally planned. Moving forward, this lesson will influence how I approach both my professional path and my personal life. Instead of holding tightly to a fixed plan, I want to remain adaptable and willing to adjust when needed. That mindset not only reduces stress but also allows me to respond more thoughtfully and creatively to whatever comes my way.

What advice would you give?

My advice for students who want to study abroad is to not be afraid to take the first step. If you’re already thinking about studying abroad, that means the desire is there and now it’s just a matter of acting on it. Start exploring programs, ask questions, and look into the resources your school offers. The process may feel intimidating at first, but each step you take makes the opportunity feel more real and more achievable. Most importantly, trust that the experience will be worth it. Studying abroad pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best way possible, helping you grow, learn, and see the world from a new perspective. If the opportunity is in front of you, take it, and you’ll be grateful you did!

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience deepened my commitment to pursuing a career in the nonprofit sector. Listening to the work each NGO is doing and the global impact they create greatly inspired me to be part of efforts that serve communities. Additionally, traveling abroad, navigating the process alongside my peers, and working through our agenda together made me genuinely grateful that I chose to take part in this opportunity.

How did you learn about this experience?

I learned about this opportunity from my professor, Dr. Joe Sample, during a class I took with him in the Spring 2025 semester. Since then, he continued to mention it and shared more details over time, which helped me better understand what the experience would involve.
