Overall Experience

Studying abroad was one of the best opportunities I’ve ever had. It offered me so many different experiences. I was able to meet the most amazing people from all different parts of the world and explore so many countries throughout Europe. I learned so much about Greek culture, while simultaneously learning so much about myself. Studying abroad pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow in my independence. I made so many amazing memories throughout the semester that I will never forget.

Learning experience

I learned so much during my time in Thessaloniki, but one of the most valuable lessons that has stuck with me is to keep an open mind and try new things. While abroad, I took a class that focused on the culture and customs of the people who live in Thessaloniki. During this class we were often pushed to try to participate in the customs of the locals and immerse ourselves. While this could feel uncomfortable and awkward at times, I found myself expanding my knowledge and understanding the locals on a deeper level. These experiences really taught me to keep an open mind and not be afraid to try new things.

Memorable experience

My most memorable experience was the last weekend trip I took before coming back to the states. All my friends and I decided to spend one of our last weekends in Crete. We were able to reflect on our last few months in Thessaloniki and make some lasting memories. Our days were spent lounging on the beach and our evenings were spent in the cutest little village making friends with the locals. That weekend was something I will never forget and made me realize how lucky I am to have studied abroad.

What did you not expect?

Something that surprised me while studying abroad was how welcoming the people were. I didn’t expect the locals to accept us with such open arms. There were many times when someone would notice a group of us students were confused about where to go or what bus to get on. Without hesitation the locals would always stop and give us advice. It wasn't uncommon for someone to notice we were American and stop to ask us how we liked their country and offer us suggestions on where to go or what to do. Their hospitality is something that made Thessaloniki feel a little more at home.

What advice would you give?

My biggest piece of advice would be to keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to go by yourself. This will really allow you to get the most out of your experience. I was able to make so many new friends and just make the most out of every day. I learned so much about myself and was able to really come out of my shell. Opening yourself up to new people, experiences, and cultures will allow you to truly have the best time.

How has this experience impacted your life?

This experience has completely changed my outlook on life. The many opportunities I had and memories I made have allowed me to grow as a person. My love for learning about other cultures has really shown through. I have found myself taking the extra step to understand and learn more about different customs and traditions. Studying abroad also allowed me to feel comfortable being very independent. Navigating a new country on my own and living with students that I did not know forced me to get out of my comfort zone. This experience impacted my life for the better.

How did you learn about this experience?

I first learned about the opportunity to study abroad from my mom. When she was in college, she did a short study abroad program and has always talked about how it was one of the best experiences she has ever had. After really considering if this was something that interested me, I decided to make an appointment with an advisor and learn more about my options. Once I heard about the semester in Thessaloniki, I found myself being very interested. The more I thought about it, the more I knew that this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
