Overall Experience
My study abroad experience was one of the most rewarding and transformative opportunities of my college career. It challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, adapt to unfamiliar environments, and embrace new perspectives. I was able to immerse myself in different cultures, explore incredible destinations, and build meaningful connections with people from around the world. Beyond the travel itself, the experience helped me grow in confidence, independence, and self-awareness. It is an opportunity that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Learning experience
The most valuable learning experience I encountered during my study abroad program was taking a fashion photography course and collaborating on projects with students from Italy. As a fashion design and merchandising student, I found it fascinating to work alongside individuals who approached fashion, design, and visual storytelling from different cultural perspectives. Through group projects and discussions, I was able to see how culture influences creativity and how different experiences can shape the way people interpret fashion. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and keeping an open mind when working with people from diverse backgrounds. It also showed me that there is no single "right" way to approach a creative project. Some of the strongest ideas came from combining different perspectives and learning from one another.
Memorable experience
One of the most memorable parts of my study abroad experience was the opportunity to fully immerse myself in a new culture while living and studying in Italy. From exploring historic cities and experiencing local traditions to interacting with people from different backgrounds, every day offered something new to learn and appreciate. While I was fortunate to visit other places during my time abroad, what stands out most is the experience of living in a different country and seeing the world from a new perspective. The friendships I formed, the experiences I shared with classmates, and the moments spent navigating everyday life in a new environment made the experience unforgettable.
What did you not expect?
What surprised me most was how quickly I adapted to living in unfamiliar environments. Before studying abroad, I expected to feel overwhelmed by cultural differences and uncertainty. Instead, I found myself becoming more comfortable with change and more willing to embrace new experiences. This has changed how I approach both my personal life and future career. I am now more confident in taking risks, seeking opportunities outside of my comfort zone, and viewing challenges as opportunities for growth.
What advice would you give?
My advice is simple: say yes to the opportunity. It can feel intimidating to leave your routine and travel somewhere unfamiliar, but the personal growth and experiences you gain are worth it. Be open to trying new things, meeting new people, and stepping outside your comfort zone. Some of the most meaningful moments will come from experiences you didn't plan for. Take advantage of every opportunity, stay curious, and make the most of your time abroad because it will go by faster than you expect.
How has this experience impacted your life?
Studying abroad had a significant impact on me both personally and professionally. Personally, it helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident in navigating unfamiliar situations. Living and learning in another country pushed me outside of my comfort zone and taught me how to embrace new experiences and perspectives. Educationally, the experience allowed me to deepen my understanding of fashion and culture through courses such as Tailoring Techniques, Fashion Photography, Italian Style and Culture, and Art and Fashion History. These classes provided hands-on learning opportunities and exposed me to different approaches to design, craftsmanship, and visual storytelling. I also had the opportunity to learn from professors and industry professionals from around the world, whose diverse experiences and expertise gave me valuable insight into the global fashion industry. This experience has influenced my long-term career goals by expanding my perspective on the role of fashion in different cultures and markets. The connections I made with professors, classmates, and professionals from various backgrounds helped me better understand the importance of global collaboration and cultural awareness in the industry. As I pursue a career in fashion design, I will carry these experiences with me and continue to draw inspiration from the international perspectives I gained while studying abroad.
How did you learn about this experience?
I first learned about studying abroad through other Iowa State students I knew who had participated in programs abroad. Hearing them share their experiences and how much they grew from the opportunity encouraged me to learn more. After talking with them, I scheduled a meeting with advisors in the Study Abroad Center to explore different program options. I then met with my academic advisor to discuss how studying abroad could fit into my degree plan and ensure the courses I took would count toward my graduation requirements. Those conversations helped me find a program that aligned with both my academic goals and my desire to experience a new culture.
