Jarrel Johnson, a doctoral candidate in the School of Education at Iowa State University, has received a prestigious $27,500 fellowship to support his research on inclusion of queer and trans* students at public historically black colleges and universities.

Johnson has been named a Dissertation Fellow by the National Academy of Education and the Spencer Foundation. The highly competitive program aims to identify and support the most talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to education.

His dissertation examines the perspectives of higher education administrators and students as they work across several organizational structures to design and actuate inclusion initiatives. From the data he gathers as part of the study, Johnson aims to pose an organizational change theory model with implications for higher education research, policy, and practice.

He is an ISU Presidential Scholar, an inaugural member of the One Iowa LGBTQ Leadership Institute, and an Asa G. Hilliard III and Barbara A. Sizemore Fellow in the American Educational Research Association.
