Orientation t-shirt commemorates a milestone and reflects innovation
Designed to commemorate the year a student enters Iowa State, the 2024 t-shirt is available online and in-store at Innovate 1858, located in the Student Innovation Center.
AMES, Iowa – OnCyte Orientation will welcome thousands of incoming students and their
guests to Iowa State this June. This year, attendees can take home a piece of innovation with a
custom orientation t-shirt designed by students.
“This shirt really reflects what we do at Iowa State when it comes to giving our students
opportunities for real-world experience as part of their education,” said Emily M.S. Worrall,
instructor and supervisor of Innovate 1858.
Innovate 1858 is Iowa State’s on-campus store where students learn to run all aspects of a
retail operation. The store features a variety of products, including some that are student-made,
giving student entrepreneurs an outlet for their products as they work to grow their businesses.
“We knew orientation t-shirt programs were happening at other institutions and are a way to
commemorate the milestone of entering college,” said Worrall. “We wanted to take that a step further and put this project in the hands of our students.”
The Innovate 1858 student team worked on designs and presented them to New Student
Programs, the office responsible for planning and executing all aspects of welcoming students
to Iowa State.
After review and feedback, the final t-shirt design has strong ties to Cyclone Pride by featuring
the popular “Cyclone Power” cheer in cardinal letters.
“Cyclone Power is something our students talked a lot about in the design process,” said
Worrall. “While it’s absolutely a tradition our incoming students will experience if they go to an
athletic event, it also reflects that idea of coming together as Cyclones, and that’s exactly what
our students are doing as they enter Iowa State this fall.”
Proceeds from the shirt will support the student experience at Innovate 1858, and a portion of
the proceeds will go to the Cyclone Aide program.
“Cyclone Aides are such an important part of welcoming new students and their guests during
orientation. We were excited for the opportunity to work with New Student Programs on the
orientation t-shirt project and give back to the Cyclone Aide program,” said Worrall.
Orientation 2024 t-shirts are $14.99 and are available online, through virtual orientation and
are available for purchase during the Orientation Resource Fair at Innovate 1858’s retail store
located in the Student Innovation Center.
Innovate 1858 Store Hours in May and June
Innovate 1858, located in the Student Innovation Center, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon (during the Orientation Resource Fair) on the following days:
