If you are among the students who earn a scholarship through the OneApp process, your work is not quite done. You need to accept your award before the scholarship funds apply to your U-Bill.

Post-Acceptance Process

Students will receive one or more of the following notifications to the email address on file with OneApp (typically ISU Net-ID) letting them know they have received a scholarship.

  • Receive an email offering the scholarship with a link to accept, or receive a notification message when logging in to OneApp.
  • Student confirms they would like to accept the scholarship in OneApp.
  • OneApp will direct you to the post-acceptance steps required for your award.

Thank You Letters

Many scholarships require recipients to submit a thank you letter to the donor. Donors typically ask for nothing in return, but receiving a well-written thank you letter from a student lets them know how much the scholarship is appreciated. Your letter reminds them of why they gave in the first place, and often helps secure continuing gifts for future students.

Addressing Your Letter

  • Include your name, major, and year in college at the top of the letter. Do not include any personal contact information.
  • Use the salutation of “Dear Scholarship Donor,”
  • Refer to the scholarship by name as it is listed above, in your award letter, and in OneApp. Do not mention the amount of your scholarship award.

Writing Your Letter

Answer the following Questions in your letter:

  • What is your name?
  • What year are you in college?
  • What is your major, and why have you chosen it?
  • Why did you choose to attend Iowa State University?
  • What activities or organizations were/are you involved in?
  • What accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • What are your plans after graduation?
  • How has this scholarship helped you?

Proofing Your Letter

  • Make sure you re-read your letter out loud and check for any grammatical errors, and to ensure it is well organized.
  • Be sure to specifically say “Thank You” to the donor and tell them how their support has made a difference.
  • Please limit your letter to one page, but do not be too brief.
  • Save your letter as a word document (.doc or .docx) and name the file SCHOLARSHIP NAME_YOUR LAST NAME.

Submitting Your Letter

  • Log in to OneApp.
  • Click on the scholarship you have written a letter for.
  • Follow the system instructions to upload a file.
