The College of Human Sciences (CHS) takes pride in recognizing and celebrating the exceptional achievements and contributions of our outstanding alumni.

Nomination packets for the CHS College Alumni Awards are submitted to the CHS Honors and Awards Committee for review and selection.

Nomination Process

The CHS Honors and Awards Committee will review all nominees and submit the chosen awardees to the Iowa State University Alumni Association. Recipients of these prestigious awards are celebrated during a special ceremony as part of Homecoming weekend each fall.

A total of five awards per year are granted by the college in the following four categories:

Alumni Achievement Award

Objective: Recognizes alumni for meritorious service and/or distinguished achievements in human sciences.

Eligibility: Any person who has an undergraduate or graduate degree from the College of Human Sciences is eligible to be nominated for this award.

Awards: One or two per year, although the Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.

Criteria: Selection is based on national or international recognition for their service or achievements. The positive impact of their contributions should be made clear in the “Impact of Professional Achievements.”

Outstanding Early Career Professional Award

Objective: Recognizes alumni for remarkable early career achievements.

Eligibility: Any person who has an undergraduate or graduate degree from the College of Human Sciences and is less than twenty years removed from their graduation date at the time of the award being received is eligible for this award.

Awards: One or two per year, although the Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.

Criteria: Selection is based on national or international recognition for their service or achievements. The positive impact of their contributions should be made clear in the “Impact of Professional Achievements.”

Virgil Lagomarcino Laureate Award

Objective: Honors alumni who are recognized for their meritorious service or distinguished achievement in education.

Eligibility: Any person who has an undergraduate or graduate degree in education or a teaching certificate from the College of Human Sciences is eligible to be nominated for this award.

Awards: One per year, although the Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.

Criteria: The nominee will have gained recognition for their service to education at the local, state, national, or international level. The positive impact of their contributions should be made clear in the “Impact of Professional Achievements.”

Helen LeBaron Hilton Award

Objective: Honors alumni who are nationally and internationally recognized for their community leadership, meritorious service or distinguished achievement in human sciences.

Eligibility: Any person who has an undergraduate or graduate degree from the College of Human Sciences is eligible to be nominated for this award.

Awards: One per year, although the Honors and Awards Committee reserves the right to not select any recipient in a given year.

Criteria: The nominee will have gained recognition for their outstanding community leadership in human sciences at the local, state, national, or international level. The positive impact of their contributions should be made clear in the “Impact of Professional Achievements.”
