Teaching Paths

Iowa State offers a variety of paths to become a licensed teacher that lead to many different types of careers. Your education will include hands-on experience in real classrooms throughout your Iowa State journey so you graduate prepared to lead a classroom of your own.

Early Childhood Education (preschool through third grade)

You will graduate with the credentials needed to become licensed to teach preschool through third grade in general and special education. Students go on to careers as teachers in classrooms, in special education, head start and as instructional strategists.

Elementary Education (kindergarten through sixth, kindergarten through eighth)

You will graduate with the credentials needed to become licensed to teach kindergarten through sixth grade in a general education setting. Additional endorsements can qualify you to teach kindergarten through eighth grade in your chosen content area.

Secondary Education (fifth through twelfth grade)

With a path in secondary education, you become an expert in your chosen subject matter by learning from professors in your specialization area. You’re also part of the School of Education’s robust program that prepares you to effectively teach content to your students. You’ll graduate with the credentials needed to become a licensed teacher in fifth through 12th grade classrooms. You can become a teacher in the following areas with a secondary education path:
