Responsibilities

My responsibilities during my internship include: actively promote the venue and its operations on social media platforms; engage with vendors and clients; work closely with the Venue Coordinator in all venue operations and event production; act as event staff for all events; update signage weekly; event setup, room flip, and tear-down; carry out competitor analyses, community research, and other tasks upon request; weekly inventory management of alcohol and other event supplies; meet with Venue Co-owner and Venue Coordinator weekly; and other duties as needed. This variety allows a range of experience in many different areas of event and venue management while only working at one location.

Accomplishments

My biggest accomplishment during this internship experience was creating a new, reinvigorated online presence for the venue and promoting it to new audiences. This has not only helped me get out of my comfort zone and put my public relations skills to the test, but it has also had a direct impact on increasing new client interactions and spreading the venue's name throughout the area.

Learning experience

One of the biggest lessons I learned from this internship experience is that you can do more than you think you can; you just have to believe in yourself and have people around you that believe in you as well. You are going to grow more if you try new things than if you just keep repeating the same things that you've already done a dozen times. Don't be afraid to stumble at times, because you will get up and learn from it.

What advice would you give?

Try and figure out what area you are most interested in (your emphasis) and then figure out an area within that to work in through your internship (venue coordination, wedding planning, sports team management, etc.). By doing this, you'll be more able to have a purposeful time in your internship that will show you how you like that area. Regardless if you end up loving that area or not, this process will allow you to narrow down and figure out what routes are and are not meant for you. It takes some time, but it will be worth that extra effort.
